Discount Tires... Really?

I know what you are probably thinking, some sort of back experience while changing tires... well, not today. A couple of days ago, my wife and I were traveling back from Dallas, when she suddenly says, "Discount Tires, that is not a name that I would want to trust for my tires." As I heard her say that, all I could think was, WOW, that is so true! I bet when the entrepreneur sat down his idea of a perfect tire place was one that would not overcharge you for the work/tires they had or did. So his conversation with his other venture capitalist might have sounded something like this, "I have it! The name of our place will be Discount Tires, and people will love it."

Many years later, the company is still strong, well I don't really know if its profitable, but they are still out there. My question to you is the following, what do you think of the name? I mean, who doesn't want to get cheaper, sorry, lowered price tires (not really cheap)? Now, the name does suggest that they are priced lowered, and that they are not necessarily cheaper, hence the Discount... Just a thought...

    It's funny that I'm studying advertising and never really put thought into the name of Discount Tire Co. My family actually has a contract with them and we've never had any problems. I suppose the reason why I've never put thought into the name is because it never struck me as being negative. I do agree that the term "discount" reflects more on cost than quality. My parents are very careful with how they choose businesses they contract with so it would be interesting to ask and see why they chose Discount Tire. ...I'll get back to you on that.

    haha that would be great, dont get me wrong, the name is a good name... As you said, Discount can be in $ and not quality.. still, interesting to know their thoughts.

    So, I approached my dad the other day since I coincidentally needed to go to Discount Tire on Saturday to get my tires rotated and balanced. Turns out, when we first moved to San Antonio, most of the area we lived in was not developed yet and the nearest tire service was Discount Tire -- about 3-4 miles away. I probed my dad with more questions to try and find out if word-of-mouth or advertisements had anything to do with their decision, but it turns out location was the main influence.

As I was waiting on gate D3 in the New York LaGuardia airport, and while waiting for a colleague to get her boarding pass out, I couldn’t help but seeing the guy that you see in the picture. I was just thinking of the power of the internet and social networking. Just thinking about your life and where you currently are, is this where you are from? Is this where you were born? It seems as if we are constantly moving in order to conquer different things, in order to achieve what we see as our goals. So back to the purpose of this post, social networking.
